Chain-link Fence can be an excellent an economical solution that when properly installed* can last many decades.
Did you know?
Chain-link fencing has a fascinating history that dates back to the 19th century. It all started in 1844 in Norwich, England, when Charles Barnard of the firm Barnard, Bishop & Barnards developed the first wire weaving machine. Inspired by cloth weaving machines, this invention laid the groundwork for what we now know as chain-link fencing. By the 1890s, Guy Mafera and the American Chain Link Fence Company had patented an exclusive manufacturing process of continuous wire fabric, making chain-link fencing a household name across the United States.
Why 'More Is Better' is making Things Worse: The Problem with Production-First Companies
When comparing quotes for chain-link fence installation, it’s crucial to be aware of low-ball prices. A lot of companies prey on the assumption that the average homeowner probably doesn’t know much about fences. They will have one of their salesman come out and get some measurements send you an estimate. If you approve the estimate, the salesman gets his percentage and the company then will sub contract installers who are willing to install the fence for an agreed upon per foot price depending on the type of fence being installed. The Fence Company is only interested in getting more work. They compete with other companies to give the lowest per foot price for fences. To win the most contracts, they must be the cheapest. To be the cheapest they need sub contracted crews that are above all else, fast. the amount of money these crews make is determined by how many jobs they complete and how many lineal feet of fence is up. This model rewards speeds at the cost of quality: holes are not dug as deep, concrete is dry poured, siding nail guns are used instead of time consuming screws, etc. It’s an “any way is alright” philosophy that results in poor quality fences being constructed at an alarming rate throughout this country. I was raised to value quality and attention to detail. That anything worth doing should be done right. When Anchored Fence installs a fence it is not only going to look great but also be great and stand plumb and straight for decades.
Fast Fences, Shoddy Results: Common Contractor Shortcuts That Sacrifice Quality for Speed
- Skipping Tension Wire: Some installers omit tension wire along the bottom or use flimsy big-box store tension wire that lacks durability.
- Improper Use of Concrete: They may only use concrete on terminal posts and pour dry concrete directly into the hole with the post, tamping it down to compact it.
- Inadequate Post Installation: Line posts are often beaten into the ground and spaced more than 10 feet apart.
- Substandard Wire Ties: Thin, short aluminum wire ties are used to attach the fabric to the frame, which is quicker but not secure.
The Anchored Fence Difference
At Anchored Fence, we do it right the first time, ensuring no corners are cut and your fence stands the test of time. Here’s what sets us apart:
- Heavy Gauge Terminal Posts: Our chain-link gates hinge from heavier gauge terminal posts.
- Concrete-Filled Gate Posts: We fill our gate posts with concrete for stability and longevity, handling hundreds of openings and closings.
- Heavy-Duty Tension Wire: Standard on all our chain-link fences is 9 gauge heavy-duty tension wire.
- Wet Mixed High Strength Concrete: We pour wet mixed high-strength concrete on every single post and keep line posts within 10 feet centers.
- Custom Welded Gates: Our chain-link gates are custom welded to accommodate grade fluctuations, eliminating unsightly gaps along the bottom.
- Vinyl Coated Matching Hardware: We use vinyl-coated matching hardware/bands/dome tops to prevent peeling.
- Secure Wire Ties: Heavy 9 gauge commercial wire ties are used to ensure the fabric is securely attached to the frame and cannot be easily removed by hand.
